A guide to New York: 190 places across nineteen sections, with the writing, the pictures and the spoken phrases all held inside the app, so it works with no signal — which, on the subway, is the point. Something not working, or something in the writing that isn’t right? Mail admin@aipple.net and you will get a reply from a person.

Does it work offline?

Yes, apart from two things. Tapping a link opens a website, and the Near Me screen asks Apple Maps for suggestions when you are outside New York. Everything else — all the writing, every picture, all hundred and two recordings — is in the app. It works underground.

Near Me says I am not in New York

Because you are not. Rather than sort a hundred and ninety New York places by how far away they are from where you are standing, the screen offers to show you what is worth seeing nearby instead. “Show New York anyway” is there if you would rather have the list.

It is not asking for my location

iOS only offers that choice once. If it was declined, it has to be changed in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → New York Cloud. The screen has a button that takes you there.

Can I choose who reads the phrases?

Yes. New York Talk has a picker at the top of the screen — a man or a woman — and it remembers which you chose. Each has its own set of recordings, so the same phrase is genuinely two different people saying it, not one voice pitched up or down.

A phrase is read in a flat, robotic voice

That one is falling back to the phone’s own synthesiser, which means its recording is missing. Every phrase should be a recording. Please say which one and it will be looked at.

I cannot hear anything

Check the side switch and the volume first. The app plays through the media volume and is built to be audible even with the ringer on silent, so if a phrase shows as playing and you hear nothing, that is worth reporting.

Can I add my own photographs?

Yes, on Your Gallery. They stay on your device and nothing is uploaded. The app never sees your photo library — only the pictures you pick.

Why does it only work in portrait?

Because it is made of full-bleed artwork and a reading column, and both are designed for a phone held upright.

Does it work on iPad?

Yes. The app runs in portrait on both iPhone and iPad.

Something is wrong in the writing

Please tell us. A wrong fact, a dead link, a picture that does not match its entry — these are worth reporting and will be fixed. Say which entry. Opening hours, prices and shows in New York change constantly, so if something is out of date, mail the entry name and what is wrong with it and it gets corrected in the next update.

A link goes to the wrong place

Links point at whoever actually runs a place, and they reorganise their websites without telling us. Send the entry name and we will repoint it.
